The first production of The Nutcracker was created over 100 years ago by Lev Ivanov (1834-1901) for the Russian Imperial Ballet. It premiered at St. Petersburg's opulent Maryinsky Theater on December 17, 1892, along with a one-act opera by Tschaikovsky. The story for the ballet was based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (1816), a tale by German writer, E. T. A. Hoffmann.
